BCI Battery Group Size Chart

Batteries are categorized into groups based on their physical dimensions by the Battery Council International (BCI). Both inches and millimeters are used to categorize the length, width, height of the dimensions. Using a battery size chart is a good way to start your investigation before researching other features like cold cranking amps (CCA) and terminal position.

A BCI battery group is a standard battery size, which allows users to find the right battery replacement more easily. In order to locate a suitable replacement battery, it is important to know the BCI battery group number of the old battery, but that information is not enough. Some batteries are marketed as the best fit, making them a little larger than the standard size. In cases where a ‘slightly larger’ battery is not able to fit in a battery compartment that is tightly fitted, these batteries may not work. Group 24 Battery 

Overview

Battery products in BCI Group 24 are mainly general-purpose batteries that can be found in applications such as large UPS systems, medical and security equipment, wheelchairs, automobiles, and industrial machinery. Typically, deep cycle batteries are used for deep cycle standby applications and for float.

Dimensions

Group 24 batteries from BCI have a dimension of (L x W x H) 10.25 x 6.8125 x 8.875 inches (260 x 173 x 225 mm). It is important to recognize that these mid-size batteries come in different subgroups with slightly different dimensions. You must be aware of the size of each subgroup, because even the slightest differences may cause the battery not to fit.

Subgroup of group 24 battery

BCI Group 24F batteries, which are rather similar, are slightly longer and wider than the other groups. Batteries from Group 24 (8 7/8 inch height) can usually be accommodated in battery compartments regardless of height differences, and in most cases they’re even able to accommodate batteries from Group 24T (9 3/4 inch height) which are 7/8 inch taller than Group 24 batteries.

Group 27 Battery

Overview

Group 27 batteries are very large and powerful, with an internal capacity of 20h and a range of 66-110 Ah, providing 600-1100 CCA and 140-220 minutes RC. In terms of weight, these vary between 24.5 and 32 kg based on internal construction. Batteries from Group 27 are very common in automotive, marine, off-the-grid, and recreational vehicles, making them one of the most popular battery types.

Dimensions

The dimensions of Group 27 batteries depend on the battery group, since there are three battery groups that are similar but each have their own specific features. The battery groups are Group 27, Group 27F, and Group 27H, though they are all called Group 27 Batteries.

Several millimeters can make a huge difference in whether a battery fits into its compartment, even when the differences between batteries are relatively small. Most manufacturers label their batteries with both the actual dimensions and the BCI Group Size, so verify the actual dimensions of your battery compartment before you buy a new battery.

Group 31 Battery 

Overview

In terms of the Battery Council International (BCI), a group 31 deep cycle battery falls under this category. Group 31 batteries have become very popular not only for vehicles, boats, and remote power sources. A deep cycle battery can be discharged and recharged multiple times.

Dimensions

Group 31 batteries are categorized primarily by their size, not by their power, even though power affects energy production. The dimensions of Group 31 batteries are 13 inches long, 6 13/18 inches wide, and 9 7/16 inches tall. Group 31 batteries are larger than Group 29NF batteries, as well as being shorter and wider than Group 29H batteries.

Group 34 Battery

Overview

Group 34 batteries are medium-size and powerful that provide 750-900 CCA, 100-145 minutes of reserve capacity. They are equipped with 20h capacities in the 50-75 Ah range. The weight depends on the battery type and internal construction that can be as low as 16.8kg and as high as 23.1kg.

Dimensions

Batteries in group 34 are measured in dimensions such as (L x W x H) 10.25 x 6.8125 x 7.875 inches (26 x 17.3 x 20 cm), weighing between 37 and 51 pounds. The BCI group 34 battery is very similar to the BCI group 24 battery. Batteries classified as group 34 by BCI provide good starting/cranking characteristics, a large number of charging/discharging cycles, and are commonly used in automotive, marine, industrial, and off-the-grid applications.

Group 35 Battery

Overview

Lead-acid batteries of the BCI Group 35 are very popular, commonly used in both starting and dual-purpose applications, for example, in cars, trucks, and RVs. Batteries, especially dual-purpose and deep-cycle batteries, are used for a variety of applications, including backup batteries for security systems, wheelchair batteries and medical batteries for off-the-grid use. BCI Group 35 batteries are mostly Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) Sealed Lead Acid batteries. However, lithium iron phosphate batteries are slowly entering the market at least for deep cycle applications.

A group 35 battery is a medium sized battery that comes in a range of sizes, from 20h in a

44-65 Ah range to 125-230 cm3 in a 90-130 minute cycle. Their physical dimensions are approximately (LxWxH) 9 1/16 x 6 7/8 x 8 7/8 inches 9.0625 x 6.875 x 8.875 inches and 230 x 175 x 225 mm, while their electrical features depend on the battery design, intended use, chemistry, etc.

Group 47, 48 and 49 Batteries

Overview – Group 47 battery

The most frequently used battery by Group 47 (H5, L2, 55L2) batteries are medium-sized batteries that are commonly utilized in automobiles and light industrial sectors for cranking and dual-purpose as well as starting mid-range diesel and gasoline engines. They’re also used to generate power while the engine(s) is shut off. Batteries in BCI Group 47 (H5, L2, 55L2) are typically maintenance-free and spill-proof AGMs, however, there are also other models available.

Dimensions

Battery dimensions for BCI Group 47 are (L x W x H) 9 1/16 x 6 7/8 x 7 1/2 inches and 246 x 175 x 190 mm. The dimensions of this battery are very similar to the DIN H5 battery and EN 55L2 battery which are (L x W x H) 242 x 175 x 190 mm.

Overview – Group 48 Battery

In general, H6, L3, and 66L3 (Group 48) batteries are commonly used for starting or dual-purpose batteries, and to power various electric and electronic devices while the main engine(s) are off or when the mains power is not sufficient. These AGM batteries offer greater vibration and shock resistance versus the Group 48 (H6, L3, 66L3) series.

Dimensions

Battery dimensions for the BCI Group 48 are (L x W x H) 12 1/16 x 6 7/8 x 7 9/16 inches (306 x 175 x 192 mm) which is the same as the DIN H6 batteries and EN 66L3 batteries with dimensions of (L x W x H) of 278 x 175 x 190 mm. Due to the similar sizes of batteries labeled H6 and L3 as well as EN 66L3 (EN standard) as BCI Group 48 equivalents, respectively.

Overview – Group 49 battery

The BCI Group 49 and Group H8 are very popular car and truck batteries, commonly used not only as starting and cranking batteries but also as dual-purpose batteries, designed to power loads whilst the main engine is shut down, such as pumps, multimedia devices, etc. There are a few key differences between BCI Group 49 and Group H8 (or Group L5 or Group 88L5) which one must know before purchasing either one of them.

Dimensions

Using BCI standards, standard Group 49 batteries have dimensions up to 15 x 6 7/8 x 7 3/16 inches and 381 x 175 x 192 mm compared to DIN/EN maximum dimensions of 354 x 175 x 190 mm. In some cases, BCI Group 49 batteries may be 27 mm longer than DIN and EN H8 batteries

Group 51 Battery

Overview

A BCI Group 51 battery is a very popular and widespread battery used as an automotive starting and dual-purpose battery, as well as a general-purpose/auxiliary battery in many other applications requiring consistent and reliable power. The sizes of group 51 batteries are defined, but their dimensions tend to vary a little bit because some manufacturers optimize their batteries based on what applications they are used for, making them either more convenient to install and more efficient. Make sure to check the size of your battery and battery compartment before you order a certain model.

Dimensions

The dimensions of BCI Group 51 batteries are 9.374 x 5.0625 x 8.8125 inches and 23.8 x 12.9 x 22.3 cm. Batteries in Group 51 are typically designed as absorbent glass mat sealed lead acid batteries that are vibration-resistant and will easily fit into the battery compartment in most cars.

Group 65 Battery

Overview

Batteries from BCI Group 65 are commonly found in automobiles, marines, and industrial applications. The benefits of advanced AGM SLA batteries make them ideal for both starting and deep-cycle applications, due to their mid-size size. Batteries in group 65 have an average capacity of 70 to 75 Ah/20h, a typical rate of 130 to 150 minutes, and a maximum discharge current of 750 to 950 Amps. Furthermore, they usually weigh between 20 to 25 kilograms.

Dimensions

The size of a BCI Group 65 battery is (306 x 190 x 192 mm) and (12 x 7.5 x 6.6 inches). Group 65 batteries are generally made as Absorptive Glass Mat Sealed Lead Acid batteries. In addition to improved vibration resistance, spill-proof design, and low maintenance, the SLA model provides all these attributes.

Batteries in the BCI Group 75 are designed mainly for automotive and light industry use, and offer excellent starting capabilities and are designed for use in both starting and dual-purpose applications. Thus, BCI Group 75 batteries are common in vehicles such as cars, trucks, and light trucks, where they are normally used to start internal combustion engines and to power various other loads like pumps, winches, lights, etc.

A BCI Group 75 battery has dimensions of 9 1/16 x 7 1/16 x 7 11/16 inches and 230 x 179 x 196 mm. In addition to powering loads while the engine is off, dual-purpose batteries are also capable of cranking the gas engine or diesel engine if there is a situation when they must provide a large amount of current.

Group 78 Battery 

Overview

Batteries in the BCI Group 78 series are used for car, light truck, and marine applications, but they are also used in light industrial applications as starting and general-purpose batteries. Batteries from BCI Group 78 are commonly used in the automotive industry in applications, which require them to provide large currents frequently and to be recharged rapidly whereas such applications demand tough and durable, high-quality batteries.

Dimensions

Group 78 batteries have physical dimensions that are similar to those of other battery groups, so they can be used almost interchangeably. In terms of dimensions, Group 78 measures (L x W x H) 10.25 x 7.0625 x 7.6875 inches or (26 x 17.9 x 19.6 cm). Almost all modern batteries are Sealed Lead-Acid and Absorbent Glass Mat batteries, which are part of BCI Group 78.

Overview

Group 94R batteries from BCI are very common among automotive and light industrial users, commonly seen on passenger and light trucks. H7, L4 and LN4 batteries are also known as Group 94R batteries by BCI. The majority of them are found in vehicles manufactured by BMW, Mercedes, Audi etc. These batteries are built to provide power in low-temperature conditions, charge quickly, support a wide range of onboard electronics, and withstand automatic start-stop applications.

Overview

Golf cart and other automotive applications typically use BCI Group GC2 and Group GC2H deep cycle batteries. They are also commonly used in marine applications, off-grid applications, for powering medical and security systems, and similar applications. The GC2 and GC2H batteries are defined as 3-cell 6V batteries, although often they are offered as 12-volt batteries for constructing 24V, 36V, and 48V battery packs with fewer batteries.

In addition to deep cycle battery applications in golf carts, BCI Group GC8 and Group GC8H batteries can be found in marine applications, off-the-grid, and medical and security systems, among others.

The BCI Group GC8 and BCI Group GC8H batteries are very similar, and they differ mostly in their dimensions. The dimensions of the Group GC8 battery are (L x W x H) 10.375 x 7.1875 x 10.625 inches and 264 x 183 x 277 mm. Group GC8H has a dimension of 10.375 x 7.1875 x 11.625 inches and 264 x 183 x 295 millimeters. In most cases, GC8 and GC8H batteries feature nominal voltages of 8 volts and nominal (20h) capacities in the range of 165-190 Ah, RC values of 290-320 minutes, and weights from 27 to 34 kilograms respectively.

Overview

In automotive, off-the-grid, and light industrial applications, BCI Group GC12 batteries provide reliable power and are designed for deep cycle applications, as well as off-grid use. Batteries known as GC12 are commonly used in golf carts, trolling motors, electric vehicles, power inverters, as well as medical facilities and security systems.

The BCI Group GC12 battery is available with dimensions of (L x W x H) 12 7/8 x 7 3/16 x 10 7/8 inches or 327 x 183 x 277 mm and a nominal voltage of 12 volts. In the past, GC12 batteries were only available in wet/flooded type, but in recent years they have also been available in sealed type and lithium type.

The BCI Group 4D, 6D and 8D Batteries are large, heavy and much powerful that are capable of storing large amounts of energy and are typically used in high-demand applications such as off-the-grid systems, security and medical device backup units, electric carts, vehicle batteries, and boat trolling motor batteries. The BCI Group 4D, 6D, and 8D have similar heights and lengths, but vary in width. It has become common for some manufacturers to label their batteries as ‘4D’ when their batteries would actually belong to the category of 6D or similar. Thus, it is always wise to check the actual size of the battery rather than just the BCI group.

Dimensions

Batteries from the BCI Group 4D, 6D, and 8D have different physical dimensions, so their performance also differs. In terms of physical dimensions, BCI Group 4D has dimensions of 20.75 x 8.75 x 9.875 inches and 527 x 222 x 250 mm. BCI Group 6D has dimensions of 20.75 x 10 x 10.25 inches, or 527 x 254 x 260 mm. Lastly, BCI Group 8D has dimensions of 20.75 x 11.125 x 9.85 inches and 527 x 283 x 250 millimeters. There are two BCI groups which are the most popular: 4D and 8D. Since 6D batteries are hard to find, BCI Group 6D batteries are not that common, at least not officially.

Overview

Battery groups U1 and U1R provided by BCI Group are general purpose batteries frequently used in medical and security applications, in golf carts, lawnmowers, camping, and electric scooters. Battery groups U1 and U1R of BCI are mainly AGM and Gel-Cell batteries. Battery manufacturers are phasing out wet and flooded batteries. In addition, lithium U1 batteries are becoming available on the market; they feature higher capacities, a greater number of charge-discharge cycles, and a lighter weight, however, the cost is higher up front.

Dimensions

The dimensions and construction of the BCI Group U1 and U1R batteries are very similar. Batteries in Groups U1 and U1R have dimensions of (L x W x H) 7 3/4 x 5 3/16 x 7 5/16 inches and 197 x 132 x 186 mm.
